For the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012, the Main Organising Committee (MOC) for the sporting fiesta has accredited 11,549 participants and 350 journalists.
According to the secretary general of MOC, Abba Yola, the participants are made up of athletes, officials and delegates with athletes expected to compete in the 25 events made up of 8,045, while the officials are 1000 with the rest being the delegates.
He also said that over 350 journalists have so far being accredited by the MOC being the largest in the history of the games.
He however, charged states fond of poaching to desist as machineries are in place to sanction any erring state.
“We know that poaching exist but we are also ready to ensure that states desist from doing this as we have realized that it is only state that is lazy that is fond of poaching athletes. So our eligibility had stated that for any athlete to represent any state, such athlete must have resided in that state for one year.
While athletes that are fond of representing different states will also be penalized if found guilty. We believe that any athlete that have competed in three Olympics, Commonwealth and All Africa Games is not expected to take part in the festival because it is meant for amateur athletes that will be discovered and groom to national stars,” he said.
The MOC scribe further re-emphasised that athletes residing outside the country are not eligible to compete at the festival except if such athlete have resided in the state for one year.
To check cheating during the festival, Yola said independent observers and collators not known to the federations and secretaries as well as the technical committee have been appointed to confirm every result after it would have been certified by the technical committee.
