Lagos State To Host Sister Games

Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development in its athletics drive and talent hunt is to host Sister City Games involving the cities of Lagos and Kumasi, Ghana.

The State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, through the Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele, said the rationale behind the Sister City Games is the wish of the Lagos State Government and the people to develop a network in the West Africa sub-region through the establishment of the Games.

Prince Adeniji-Adele, made this known at an inaugural meeting for the Sister City Games held in Kumasi, Ghana recently when he led a 10-man delegation to Ghana.

The Commissioner, said the State Government proposes the Lagos-Kumasi Games project as a way of networking in the West African sub-region, adding that the Lagos State is ready to host the Sister City Games for a period of 5-Years to make the Games Pan West Africa.

According to him, the objectives of the Games include fostering good neighbourliness within the sub-region, to develop economic ties focusing on people to people transactions, develop tourism, cultural and economic exchange between the people of the sub-region, and develop sports and talent of young people.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, has constituted the Lagos Main Organising Committee with the appointment of Engr. Adeyemi–Wilson as the Chairman, Honourable Agboola Dabiri, Braimah Bashir and Yusuf Alli as members.


Francis Cornah, the representative of the Regional Governor, Kumasi said the list of Ghana representatives on the Main Organising Committee would be made available soon.


The Kumasi Regional Minister, Kofi Apo-Meku, who welcomed the Honourable Commissioner and assured the Lagos State Government of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s support for the Sister City Games.

The Games is expected to work within the oversight of the National Olympic Association and also fit into the mandate of ECOWAS and it will be so reflected.

Events expected to be competed for include football, tennis, table tennis, athletics, badminton, basketball and taekwondo as the event would hold at theTeslim Balogun Stadium and Rowe Park Sports Centre .
