Fide Master Olamide Ajibowo, Candidate Master Charles Campbell and 2 times winner, Toyin Jegede showed up. Other aspiring champions included Oloruntola Gbenga, Oluwole Oladele and Tosin Akinwamide.
In round one, the above mentioned players all won their games; what was remarkable was that they all used the black pieces which usually means they were to defend. Their victory meant that there was no upset in round one leaving the search for the potential champion wide open.
In round two, those same above mentioned players also won their games with one exception. The two times winner of past events, Toyin Jegede lost a hard fought game to Akinseye Abiola, who is the leading chess player in Yaba College of Technology. In recent events, Toyin Jegede has not been managing his nerves well in the tensest of games. At the end of this round 2, fans and aficionados were expecting either Oluwole Oladele or Olamide Ajibowo to win they exhibited the most fighting spirit.
Round three was very exciting because it featured the clash of heavyweights. Most of the earlier mentioned players met themselves and the lesser known players meeting them were the ones in fine form. Charles Campbell trounced Tosin Akinwamide in a game that involved slow maneuvers. Oloruntola Gbenga checkmated Abiola Akinseye while Olamide Ajibowo forced Roland Dieji to resign.Oladele Oluwole also won his game.
Round four was the final round. It was the round that would determine the champion. All eyes were following the games of the best performers of the day and they were Charles Campbell, Olamide Ajibowo, Oladele Oluwole and Oloruntola Gbenga. These four persons were paired against each other. On board one, Oluwole Oladele played Oloruntola Gbenga while Olamide Ajibowo met Charles Campbell on board two.
After intense struggle, Oloruntola Gbenga managed to defeat Oluwole Oladele whilst Olamide Ajibowo played what pundits described as world class to defeat Charles Campbell.
Their game was the longest and it was difficult to judge who had the advantage for long spells of the game as Ajibowo had lost a lot of materials but had compensation in form of an initiative.
As the difficult game progressed Charles Campbell , without being attacked gave up significant material and with that the game, so, Olamide Ajibowo became the champion of Chess Heights Monthly of May 2011.
