Strong indication emerged last night on likely hood in 'change of guard' in Nigerian chess playing hierarchy following the brilliant display of Kolade Onabogun at the on going Nigerian Breweries International Open Chess Championship at the National Stadium in Lagos.
After seven rounds of play as at yesterday, the Ruy Lopez master still has a perfect score of six after his mastery display against Olamide Ajibowo in the sixth round of matches in the FIDE section.
Onabogun exploited his opponent's weak pawn structure after an early exchange of minor officers and forced the Khanty-Mansisky' s World Chess Olympiad debutant to resign after 32 moves.
In other games in the category, defending champion, International Master Bunmi Olape was ruthless on Benjamin Omorere with a win after 25 moves and to earn five points while Oragwu Nonso also dismissed Eugene Unwana to earn five points too.
Bomo Kigigha, Rotimi Ajele and Olanipekun Agusto all have four points each and are still in contention for the top prize in the category.
In the female section, defending champion, Nsisong Bassey Asanga maintained her perfect score so far in the competition with another win against Rachael Dappa and still maintained the lead at the top with six points.
While Funmilayo Akinola was better against Vivian Dzaayem to move one point distant of Asanga.
