The fight for places in the money spinning Round of 64 of the season five of MTN Lagos Street Soccer begin this weekend across 16 centres in the state.
From the initial 850 teams that began the campaigns last month, 147 of them that made it to the round of three will this weekend jostle for places in the round of 64 of the tournament.
With 16 centres hosting the matches across Lagos State, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has also put things in place to ensure that matches are monitored in these centres. Among the 53 local council and local council development areas that began the competition, teams from 47 LG/LCDA are at present in the race for the title after the conclusion of the second round last weekend.
For this weekend, super centres like Lagos Island’s Elegbata, Ifako Ijaiye’s TTC, Ikorodu’s Funturf, Ajegunle’s Maracana and Oshodi Comprehensive School will come alive with top teams aiming for their spots in the prize winning round of 64.
Defending champion, Lawal Akapo also admitted that this weekend’s matches would be exciting considering the pedigree of teams that made it to the round of three.
Among the top teams targeting places in the round of 64 are Ikeja’s Olutoyese, Kosofe’s Kunle Soname, Oriade’s Emmanuel, Lagos Island’s Isale Gangan and Agege’s Kosoko, while Lawal Akapo also reiterated their intention to hold on to the title.
Meanwhile, there was a twist of event yesterday in the protest against Oyerokun team by Hassan Idowu during the second round match, with the Arbitration Panel of the LOC headed by former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Austin Akosa upholding the appeal filed by Hasan Idowu.
After thorough investigation, it was discovered that Oyerokun fielded a red-carded player during the encounter against Hassan Idowu, which was against the rules guiding the competition.
With this, the panel awarded the match to Hassan Idowu and further fined for the act.
This development, however, gave Hassan Idowu an edge to top the group and proceeded to the round of three.
