The countdown to the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012 commences tomorrow September 25, when President Goodluck Jonathan flags off the movement of the Torch of Unity for the festival in Abuja.

The President will be joined at the event by state governors including Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State as well as the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Deputy Governor Lagos, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and other members of the LOC.

According to the Secretary General of the LOC, Kweku Tandoh, the flag off of the Torch Tour would mark the official countdown to EKO 2012. “On the 25TH September in Abuja, we will witness the flagging-off of the movement of the Torch of Unity for the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012.

The Festival Torch is expected to go round all the other 35 states of the federation and the FCT during a 60-day period before arriving in the host state, Lagos," he said.

Tandoh added that the Torch symbolises unity and friendship and these are some of the ideals of the National Sports Festival.

He said: “The Torch of Unity symbolises the unity and friendship that is engendered by the spirit of the National Sport Festival.

The Games were actually conceived after the civil war as one of the tools of building friendship, unity and bonding amongst the various federating units of the nation.

Flagging off of the Torch Tour reminds us that the festival is a national event that involves the whole of Nigeria, so every state in the federation will have the Torch with them for some days thereby creating awareness amongst the people in those states.

It also shows that we as one nation, will be gathering in Lagos State to participate in the 18th National Sports Festival, come November 2012.”
