The huge investment and
commitment of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola,on Sport development, would
serve as the major factor that would motivate the State's athletes to
the18TH National Sports Festival tagged EKO 2012 Games to put in their
utmost best in surpassing previous records achieved at the
Garden City Games hosted by the Rivers State Government.
A member of the technical committee of Team Lagos,Adeniran Adeniyi, who made this statement while speaking with our Sports Correspondent, said the Lagos State
government had transformed the face of sports in the state with the renovation of sport facilities and also paving the way for the athletes to excel in the games by creating a platform for private individuals and corporate bodies to delve into sports sponsorship.
"With what the State Government have been doing for the past two years, we did not have a choice than to do well, over a million Naira is been given to the Athlete per day from the State Governor,so we have no reason not to do well".
"We have been working tirelessly, for the first time we have a flawless preparation, and it had not been like that for the past years"."I know that we are going to do extremely well,i have talk to the Athlete and they are highly motivated and have talk to the Coaches who are doing their best,we have the Athlete toward since March and that is going to make a different."
Adeniji,a formal board member of the Lagos State council, confirmed that over million Naira were being expended on the athletes on daily basis in a bid to motivate and encourage the athletes who are already in closed camping preparatory to the EKO 2012 Games to justify the enormous financial investment on hosting the Games and improving the status of sports in the state by putting up an extra ordinary performance at the Games.
"All the 25 sports are strong holds.and we are participating in all,we are going to make sure we try our best in winning Medals,we are not going to single out any event". The Athlete are in good spirit, the Coaches are doing their best, the Athlete are been look after, all is left now is for the Athlete is to give their best to the State."
According to him,the Team Lagos training programmes have been flawless and the athletes are in good spirit to compete for honors when the games start on the 27th of November,2012,adding that the Lagos State government never believed in poaching athletes to win the games but discover and nurtured athletes to stardom which is in line with the concept of the National Sports Festival.
"We have been in camp since march and that was an open camping, then for the past two months". We have modified opening camp where all the sport train twice a day and we give them launch,so they do not have to go out during the break they stay in the training ground, they eat launch, rest and train in the evening."
"Now that we are in close camp for about 9 days ago, they are going to be in constant training from now to the beginning of the Sport Festival on the 27 of next month".
"We have in place a total of 851 athlete and 134 coaches in camp right now,in addition to those we have helpers especially in terms of Para Sports".
"So in camp we have about thousand and thirty four in close camp, well we are preparing to be best of our abilities and the best of both human and financial resources available, what i can assure you is that Lagos State is going to do extremely well in this championship,in almost all the sport,Lagos State are to take part in all the 25 Sport event." Adeniji explained.
He said the Governor had charged Team Lagos to win the games but not the usual "win at all cost" as the management team of Team Lagos would not delve into influencing referee's or judge's decision in a bid to top the Games medals table.
"The Governor has told us to go there and do our best and of course we want to host to win,we are not going to buy Referees and we are going to give the best track to the State,we help the Athlete to discover their potential and expose their talent. he said
He added that the efficacy of various sports programmes in state such as the Adopt -A- Talent programme,Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, among others would come to play at the EKO 2012 Games and the next National Sports Festival,in Calabar,in 2014,stressing that move is in line with the Governor's believe that the games should be an avenue to help the athletes discover their potentials.
