In an efforts to reclaim its position as African best, the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation,NTTF, has resolved to start an aggressive developmental table tennis programme with the support of Nigerian international ping pongers.
Nigeria through its table tennis players in the past tops the chart of African Table Tennis Federation,ATTF, but the trend has changed as Egypt and Tunisia have edged out Nigeria in the ATTF rankings due to their consistent developmental programmes.
Disturbed by the trend, the newly elected President of NTTF, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, said the present board had been discussing with the nation's notable foreign ping pongers such as Segun Totiola, Monday Merotohun, Aruna Quadri, Seun Ajetunmobi, Effiong Edem, Ganiyat Ogundele among others to build a virile structure for the growth of table tennis in Nigeria.
The NTTF President who doubles as the Lagos State Commissiner for Sports, said the programme would stroke -off when the Nigerian foreign based ping pongers return to the country after their off- season as it would create opportunity for the Federation's Head Coach, Nosiru Bello, to work continue working on the newly discovered table tennis players who would take over from aging ping pongers.
The former chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, said plans were in top gear to set up a coach commission in a bid to work with others coaches at the zonal level so as to select the players for the programme which would be run on regular basis, stressing that over thirty young ping ponger would have opportunity to participate in the programme.
Oshodi assured that he would initiate similar developmental programmes he introduced to the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, adding that the programme motivated the state's table tennis teams to dominate the table tennis event at the last National Sports Festival tagged EKO 2012 Games.
