Kids Golf International Ambassdors, Georgia Oboh, Anita Uwadia, win golf awards for the Nigerian team at the just concluded US Kids European Golf Championships in Gullane, Scotland.
The tourney was attended by over five hundred kids from more than forty countries and they competed over three days in the cold blustery winds in the East Lothian region of Scotland, United Kingdom.
The highlights included the opening ceremony where the Nigeria flag was flown by a group of eleven kids and their parents.
However one of the kids Diana Osmond was unable to make the trip due to a delay in obtaining the required visa from the British Embassy in Lagos.
Ikoyi 1938 GC players, Georgia Oboh and Anita Uwadia, claimed trophies in their age groups of 12 and 15 as the Founder of United States Kids,Dan Van Horn commended the efforts of the Kids Golf International and the Nigerian team for the progress the Nigerian team had made in just two years of attending the world class event.
In addition to Oboh and Uwadia both from Ikoyi GC 1938, who won laurels at the European event, 7 other players, Jordan Thompson, Manchang Samuel of Rayfield GC 1913, Chiemerie Isife of Enugu Golf club, Ethan Akpan, Chinwe Obuaya of Ibori GC Asaba, Tomi Obatoyinbo and Avani Prashant of Ikoyi GC 1938 all qualified to attend the U.S Kids World Championships as they shot scores within the qualifying criteria for the event which is due to take place August 1 - 3 2013 at the Pinehurst Golf Resort, North Carolina.
The team included kids aged from 6 years to 17 years and hailed from various golf clubs around the country including Ikoyi Club 1938 who supported their team of children with financial assistance and also Enugu Golf club Captain Mr Ben Etiaba supported their player financially.
Ibori GC, Asaba also supported their player while the bulk of the support came from the parents of the players. Isaac Wadak also provided support for the player from Rayfield Golf Club 1913.
The last day of the competition, Friday, saw Georgia Oboh as the only player from Nigeria to qualify to play in the International Team for The Van Horn Cup which is a match play between the International team and the team of Western Europe in Ryder Cup style team matches.
The International team won the cup for the first time since the inception, so Georgia went home with TWO trophies as a result and also obtained an automatic invite to all of the 2013 US Kids events.
The tourney was an eye-opener in the area of junior golf development and the chaperone from Ikoyi Club 1938, Dr Mrs Marinho commented on the organisation of the various golf bodies around the world and is now committed to helping the Nigerian Golf Federation, develop an extensive programme along with the KGI team (Kids Golf International).
In response, President of KGI, Prince Kehinde Thompson expressed gratitude to all parents and sponsors who brought their children to play and was very pleased with the results from the Nigerian Camp.
KGI will be looking forward to working with the Nigerian Golf Federation and other corporate bodies who wish to key into our mission and vision of developing young sporting Ambassadors through the game of the golf.
