Senate President, David Mark, has charged all the states sports councils to establish a well structured grassroot sports programme aimed at developing sports in Nigeria.
Mark, made this comment on Thursday during the unveiling of the 2013 National Youth Games billed for December, in Abuja.
The senate President, who commended the National Sports Commission ,NSC, for initiating the Games design to discover and nurture athletes to stardom, said the Games came at a time when the nation need to re- brand and re- focus her sports programmes to make the nation proud at international competitions.
Mark, who was not happy over the poor outing of the Nigeria athletes to the London 2012 OLympic Games, said the gesture would serve as an avenue to start early preparations ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, adding that the NSC should based the selection of athletes on merit.
While felicitating with the Minister of Sports,Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, over the victories so far recorded by the Super Eagles, the Senate President, also commended the Golden Eaglets to topping its group with six points after a win over Mexico and three - all draw against Sweden.
He charged the players as well as the team's techical crew not to relent in their efforts to win this year's edition of the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates.
He appealed to other corporate bodies to emulate Nestle Milo, the sponsor of this year's National Youth Game, in Abuja.
