To attract potentials sponsors to support school sports in the country, National Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM) is organizing a one-day fair in Lagos.
Its Chairman, Yemi Idowu, the essence of the fair, was to expose the benefits of supporting school sports to potential sponsors.
“The new NASCOM is acting on its mandate received from the Bolaji Abdullai-led National Sports Commission (NSC) and we are planning to have a sponsors’ fair where we will have all potential sponsors in one room to review all our events and initiate the negotiation process for 2014, 2015 and 2016. This is going to be the first time this is being done for school sports (academicals). The essence is to bring more transparency to the sponsorship process,” he said.
He added: “We also want to use this opportunity to introduce the benefits and opportunities to potential sponsors who may not be considering this form of endeavor. We also want to use the opportunity to start a new process where corporate organizations can bid for sponsorship and also collaborate with complimenting brands on a very transparent process.”
Idowu, who is also passionate about the grassroots sports, further said: “It is also an opportunity us in the sporting fraternity to receive feed back on the needs of the sponsors and for us to network on our future plans. This the first time we will be doing it, so we are going to be learning and experimenting on the mode of the fair. We will be very flexible on the timing of the sessions. The most important thing for this first exhibition and sponsors fair is that it will be free for all participants.”
Components bodies like the Nigeria School Sports Festival (NSSF) and Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) would also be supported by NASCOM in executing some of its programmes.
Idowu explained further, “NASCOM will be the umbrella body which will be used to jointly raise awareness and funds for the promotions of schools sports and improvement of age grade competitions at the school level.
Part of NASCOM’s mandate is to establish effective private sector participation in sports by seeking sponsorships for academicals sports competitions while collaborating and partnering with key stakeholders like NSSF and YSFON.”
