Athletics Federation of Nigeria President and Publisher of SportsDay group of Newspapers, Chief Solomon Ogba, has said the victory of the Golden Eaglets at the UAE U17 tournament underlines the potentials of the average Nigerian sportsman if given the latitude to excel, and makes the Super Eagls victory at SA 2013 very real.
Ogba, who was for eight years the Sports Commissioner in Nigeria’s number one sports state, Delta, was reacting to the Eaglets victory at the World U17 championship in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He revealed that the collective weight of the NSC Chairman, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, NSC Director General, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye and the NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, has brought in a new season of unity in the administration of sports in the country.
“My advise to them is that they must remain focused, united and ready to push Nigerian sports to the highest level because from what I have seen they have what it takes to get to the very height of sports in the country abd globally.
He also took time off to admonish Corporate Nigeria on their responsibilties towards sports growth and development in the country, noting that it’s not only when teams win tournaments that companies should roll out the drums.
“The corporate world must take responsibility from the word go. Support teams and events at all levels, and what they are doing is investing in the youths of the country and future champions of the world. They must not wait for victories to be achieved before they start putting adverts in the media to celebrate the teams. Now is the time to back all the teams and events in Nigeria and I’m sure we have responsible corporate citizens to do that”, he concluded.
