The family of Late Alexander Molade Okoya-Thomas, has agreed to continue sponsoring the annual Asoju-Oba table tennis closed championship.
One of the deceased sons, Deji Okoya-Thomas, who made this statement yesterday at the Evening of Tributes in honour of Sir Chief Alexander Molade Okoya-Thomas, said the family would uphold the legacy of the Asoju-Oba of Lagos of empowering the youths through sports especially table tennis.
The former chairman of Lagos State Football Association, said, the family would meet very soon to announce the date for this year's edition of the competition which has produced Nigeria's great ping-pongers like Babatunde Obisanya, Lateef Sunmola,
Atanda Musa, Sunday Eboh, Toyin Okenla, Bose Kaffo, Funke Oshonaike, Ganiyat Ogundele, among others.
He explained that, the competition title, Asoju-Oba, might be changed for another name because the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Highness, Rilwan Akiolu, has the sole right to name another reputable son of the soil as the Asoju-Oba of Lagos.
The family's positive remarks was delightful to the Lagos State Table Tennis players and officials as the competition which started in 1969, is the longest sponsored table tennis competition in Nigeria.
A cross section of the state's ping-pongers, thanked the deceased family not only for sustaining the legacy of Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas but also for creating a platform to build a brighter rewarding future for the ping-pongers.
