Before then, Nigeria goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo was sent off for a professional in the 26th minute, when he brought down Fred Ngoma, who was clear on goal after the Flying Eagles was caught napping.

Skipper Muhammed was denied by the Congo shot stopper after six minutes when he fired from point-blank range as the Flying Eagles stayed in attack even after their early goal.

In the 14th minute, Ifeanyi Matthew threatened again when he was free on top of the box, but he misdirected his shot well off the target.

Congo chased the game after they fell two goals behind with substitute goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo tipped for corner a goal-bound effort by Hardy Binguila after 37 minutes.

And two minutes from half time, big striker Silvere Ganvoula Mboussy’s header by the near post missed narrowly.

In the 64th minute, Awoniyi’s header off a cross from the left by Mustapha Abdullahi was pushed away for a corner by the Congo goalkeeper.

In the 77th minute, Abdullahi failed to hit target from inside the box after he was set clear by Ifeanyi Matthew.
