The kick off of the 2015 Lagos SWAN Cup earlier scheduled for Friday July 24 has been shifted by two days to Sunday, July 26.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the executive committee of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Lagos chapter, explained the postponement is in honour of the South West Sports Summit and the Elective Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, both events of which are holding on same date in Abeokuta and Abuja, respectively.
The statement signed by Lagos SWAN Chairman, Fred Edoreh, said "as a responsible organisation, Lagos SWAN cannot ignore the importance of the South West Sports Summit to chart the path of development for sports in the region nor can it afford not to be pary of the national congress of the NUJ, our parent body. Both events are of high interest to our members and we would humbly defer to them."
The chairman of the sports committee, Debo Oshundun, explained further that except for the novelty match between Lagos SWAN Editors/Veterans and a team of ex internationals which now has to hold on Sunday, July 26 instead of July 24, the shift does not affect the other events and dates of the SWAN Week.
"The group matches will still hold on the following Monday and Tuesday, the annual Lagos SWAN Seminar on the future of our sports in which the DG of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut, and the president of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, will speak on different topics will still hold on Wednesday, July 29, while the semi finals and finals of the SWAN Cup will still hold on July 30 and 31," Oshundun said.
