The forty- seventh edition of the Asoju Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis Championship will stroke- off on Monday,30th of November, 2015 at the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas indoor Sportshall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The son of late Okoya-Thomas, Ayodeji Okoya-Thomas, who noted that this year's edition which is the first after the demise of his father, said the family was delighted that they continue with the legacy the former Asoju Oba of Lagos of developing the standard of the table tennis through the annual tournament.
"It is unique that the tournament will the first after 46 years that it is not being addressed by the initiator and sole sponsor of the competition, Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas"."One of his greatest wishes while alive was that the family should continue the sponsorship of the tournament after his demise". "We would therefore like to give God all the glory for giving the family the grace to continue the noble legacy.
While explaining that the tournament has produced great Nigeria's ping
pongers lihe Babatunde Obisanya, Lateef Sunmoila, Atanda Musa, late Yomi
Bankole, Bose Kaffo and Funke Oshonaike, among others,Okoya- Thomas,
said the name of the competition has been re-christened from Asoju Oba
Table Tennis Championship to Asoju Oba Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis
Championship since there is a new Asoju Oba of Lagos.
According to him, a total of twenty- two titles will be at stake in three categories, cadet, Intermediate and senior as the tournament will also accommodate Para- table tennis players, administrators, coaches and
Sports Writers Association of Nigeria,SWAN, Singles.
The former chairman of Lagos State Football Association, said the family had introduced two trophies which would be kept by the winners of women's and men's singles, which would be in addition to the giant trophy that would be presented to winners, adding that the family is introducing two miniature trophies which would be kept by the winners of women's and men's singles which is in addition to new giant trophies that would be presented to the champions.
He congratulated President Muhammed Buhari and the Nigeria Football Federation,NFF, as well as teeming Nigerian soccer fans on the feat achieved by the Golden Eaglets at the just concluded FIFA Under 17 World up in Chile.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Sports Commission,LSSC, has commended the family of late Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas for continuing with the legacy of the former Asoju Oba of Lagos in sponsoring the annual table tennis championship.
Its Chairman,Ayodeji Tinubu, made this remark yesterday at a media parley to useher in the forty-seventh edition of the tournament which the family has changed its name from Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship to Asoju Oba Molade Okoya- Thomas Table Tennis Championship.
While noting that the tournament has produced great Nigeria's ping-pongers like Babatunde Obisanya, Atanda Musa, Bose Kaffo, Funke Oshinaike among others, Tinubu, said the commission would support the tournament in order to further discover talented ping pongers.
