Segun Toriola Leads Nigerian Ping Pongers To Moscow

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation,NTTF, has shortlisted a total of ten ping pongers that will represent Nigeria at the World Table Tennis Team team event billed for Moscow, Russia in May 2010.

Segun Toriola who plays professional table tennis in France and currently occupying number Ninety two(92) in the ITTF lastest ranking for the month of March, 2010 tops the list of invited pingpongers in the male category.

Toriola, who was placed 79 on ITTF ranking as at February 2010 slipped to 89 in February, 2010.

The list also include Monday Merotohun who plays professional table tennis in France not forgetting Harun Quadri, an home based ping pong er who is currently being placed 261 on the ITT latest ranking.

Others are Bode Abiodun who featured in the ITT pro tour of Germany and Seun Ajetunmobi who won the a brand new car at the fortieth edition of the Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship but occupied 344 in the ITTF ranking.

In the female cadre, Offiong Edem who plays professional ping pong in France tops the list of female table tennis players.

Ganiyat Ogundele who lost to Tolu Durosimi Etti in the Quarter final of last year's Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship tops the list of home based Nigerian female ping pongers.

Atinuke Olaide, a student of Physical and Health Education from the University of Lagos and also a member of Union Bank Table Tennis Club who won the Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship after beating Rashidat Ogundele, is also on the list followed by Offiom Janet Friday and Ganiyat Olatunde, a younger sister of Ganiyat Ogundele.

The Secretary of NTTF, Segun Oguntade, informed sportsweight.blogspot.com, that table tennis players were selected based on their current form and performance in all the recent competitions they featured.

Oguntade, said some of the invited players especially in the male category do participate in ITTF sanctioned Pro tour tournaments as the events enabled them to acquire points and enhance their ranking.

According to him, Segun Toriola and Haruna Quadri got to the last sixteen in the doubles event in the World Table Tennis tournament, stressing that Toriola reached the main chart of the Pro tour of Kuwait.

On the invited female ping pongers, Oguntade said their invitation would pave the way for the home based players to garner experience and exposure, adding that it would further brighten their readiness for the Commonwealth Games billed for India in October.

He said the Federation would a sum of twenty million naira to effectively participate in the World Team Championship, adding that NTTF has forwarded its request to the National Sports Commission for approval.

He said the removal of Sanni Ndanusa as the Chairman of NSC would not affect them from embarking on the trip.
