
An upset was averted in the ongoing 42nd edition of the Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship as an unseeed ping ponger, Ayo Udoh, almost dismiss the defending champion, Atinuke Olaide, who has booked a quarter final ticket.
Atinuke, who beat Rasheedat Ogundele to win the 41st edition of the tournament fought hard to book quarter final ticket in a game which ended,4 set to 3.
Udoh Ayo, an unseeded ping ponger gave her best to create an upset but Olaide who plays professional in Portugal rely solely on her experience and skills to outplay her opponent whose courage was appreciated by table tennis enthusiasts.
Olaide will today in the quarter final meet Odusanya Bose who defeated Bose Ogunnubi who sent packing Aminat Fashola, 11 - 6, 11 - 9, 11 - 3, 11 - 8, four straight set.
Ganiat Olatunde, who will face Idris Morufat in the quarter final outplayed Bose Akinsete by four straight set of 11 - 6, 11 - 4, 11 - 5, 11 - 4.
Tolu Durosimi Etti who denied Ganiyat Ogundele, the opportunity of defending her title as the winner of a brand new salon car to mark the fortieth edition scaled through to the quarter final after defeating Funke Hassan by four staright set, 11 -7, 11- 8, 13 - 11 , 11 -4.
Anu Ajuwon beat Sidikat Sunmonu four set to two to book a date with Rasheedat Ogundele.
According to our correspondent, reports that eight players in the women's singles were bye to the second round prior to the third round.
In the Men's Singles, Lanre Jegede who was bye to the second round was walked over by Gbenga Ajulo to pave the way for Ajulo to qualify for the quarter final after pulling out of the event.
Gbenga Ajulo will now meet Adeyinka Ahmed who beat Azeez Ogunlade four set to three as Mojeed Olyiwola beat Tunde Kalejaye by four set to three as Ashimiyu Ganiyu who represented at the Nigeria African Junior Championship outstroked Qudus Oladejo by four straight set.
Kazeem Adeniyi, who won the competition in 2006 beat Joseph Osendiku by four straight set while Salman Abdullahi walke over Daniel Idowu.
Nimota Aregbesola, Isiwat Willougby, Bose Akinsete, Almaroof Ayisat, Oyindamola Ekundayo have scaledthrough to Quarter final of the Junior Girls Singles as Raji Azeez, Quadri Kazeem, Segun Nurudeen, James Mathew and Qudus Summer are also through to the Semi final of the Boys Junior Singles.
