
An upset has recorded in the forty second edition of the Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship as Ganiyat Olatunde defeated the defending champion in the Women's Singles, Atinuke Olaide, in a classic game at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sportshall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Atinuke Olaide who has been tipped to win the Women's Singles based on her current move to Portugal to Pofessional table tennis was disgraced yesterday when Ganiyat Olatunde who was not seeded outplay Olaide, former Union Bank Table tennis player 4 set to 2 in a best of seven games.
To show her supremacy over Olaide, Ganiyat Olatunde picked the first three set of 13 - 11, 11 - 6, 11 - 7 after which Olaide fought hard to pick the next two games, 14 - 12, 11 -9.
Having regained her confidence, Olatunde sprung into active to pick the last set, 11 -4, to qualify for the final bill for today at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sportshall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
While speaking on her victory, Olatunde said she was determined to beat Olaide because she stopped her from qualify for the final of last year's edition of te tourney, adding that she was charged to perform beyond her expectation because she wants to break the jinx.
In the second Women's Singles Semi final, Rasheedat Ogundele who will now meet Ganiyat Olatunde in the final beat Fatimo Bello by four staright set of 11 - 8, 11 2, 11 - 7, 11 - 5.
In the Men's Singles Semi final, Ganiyu Ashimiyu beat Ganiyu Ajulo, 11- 3, 7 - 11, 11 - 6, 11- 7, 11 - 3 to book a date with Kazeem Adeniyi who defeated sensational young ping ponger, Omotayo Olajide.
Olajide, who was recently moved to the Senior category from the junior cadre proved that he is a force to reckon with in the sport as he gave Adeniyi a tough time ina game which ended, 10 - 12, 11 - 2, 11 - 8, 9 - 11,5 - 11, 11- 6 , 11 - 7,( 4 - 3).
