Former Captain of Green Eagles, Segun Odegbami, has supported the Nigeria Football Federation's claims that the synthetic turf at the Teslim Balogun Stadium affected Super Eagles players during the International Friendly against Sierra Leone in Lagos, in February, 2011.
Chief Coach of Super Eagles, Samson Siasia, complained over the turf, saying his players were unable to play freely due to the synthetic turf of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, a move which called for delibration by the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation of which the National Stadium, Abuja, has been selected for the crucial African Nations Cup Qualifier against Ethiopia.
While praising Lagos soccer fans are excellent as they turn Lagos to a slaughter house for visiting teams during his playing days as the atmosphere of the sports complex becomess uncomfortable for their opponets, Odegbami said playing on a synthetic turf of the Teslim Balogun Stadium neutralises the Super Eagles skills as they are expected to have master the turf before the match.
Odegbami, said the turf was aproved by FIFA for use but it is not suitable in a country where there is availability of natural grass that could be well maintained, adding that ninty percent of the football matches played across the world are not being played on artificial pitches.
He believed that the Chief Coach of Super Eagles have coaching pedigree that could make him to excel in major tournaments.
