The week three of the Lagos State Table Tennis League holds today at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park with 20 teams jostling for the top prize.
For the technical director of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association (LSTTA), John Peters, four teams have signified interest to be part of this week’s event.
The teams are Springfresh Team three, while Union Maritime Club anchored by Portugal-based Gbenga Anthony has three teams joining the competition.
The decision to have the club was born out of Anthony’s passion for the game as well as an avenue to encourage the upcoming players.
Peters, one of the few international umpires in the country was so excited about these new teams, saying this goes to show that the competition has continued to gain more followership and it has also aroused the interest of Lagosians.
Meanwhile, Union Bank Sports will be hoping to remain on top of the league tables when the competition serves off today while youthful Springfresh Teams will be targeting another major upset this week.
The Springfresh team was spearheaded by Ayo Omotara as well as national junior sensation, Olajide Omotayo and Mojeed Olayiwola that in the week two of the competition, the team edged out highly rated Union Bank team three comprising national such players as Kazeem Adeniyi and Dotun Aiyelumo.
Captain of the Union Bank women’s Team A, Fatimo Bello, said he was using the championship to prepare for the National Sports Festival to be hosted by Lagos in November, adding that she is confident of wining a gold medal.
