The week two of the Lagos State Table Tennis League has once again being dominated by Union Bank Sports Club with the Bankers' sides ruling the men and women events.
Also, the inspirational player of the Union Bank team A in the women's event, Fatimo Bello believes making the national team remains her priority.
Bello, who has continued to show her class in the weekly tournament holding at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, while youthful Springfresh team B became the cynosure of all eyes as the Ayo Omotara-inspired side caused a major upset in the quarterfinal stage of the one-day tournament.
The team made up of Omotara, Olajide Omotayo and Mojeed Olayiwola had earlier in its group bundled out highly rated Union Bank team three made up of national player like Kazeem Adeniyi and Dotun Aiyelumo.
According to the technical director of the tournament, John Peters, the performance of the Springfresh team has given the championship some credence as most of the upcoming players have continued to shine weekly.
However, Union Bank once again dominated the tournament as the men and women bankers’ teams are topping the tables.
But the team A of Union Bank that won the week one has been upstaged by team B after the A team lost 3-2 to team B in the women’s final, while the team A still ruled in the men’s event.
“Generally, it was a good continuation of highly skilled play by all the teams. It continued to serve as a very wonderful experience for all the teams and with a continuous improvement over the weeks, the State’s high hopes of doing well in the forthcoming National Sports Festival are on course,” Peters, who is the longest serving umpire in the country said.
Captain of the Union Bank women’s team A, Fatimo Bello said: “I am using the championship to prepare myself for the National Sports Festival to be hosted by Lagos in November 2012 and I am confident that I will win gold medal.”
She however, said that she hopes to make the national team in nearest future.
“I want to be a national player and also represent Nigeria outside the country. This is my ambition for now and I am working hard to surpass former national champions like Bose Kaffo,” Bello said.
