Veteran boxing coach Joe Mensah and World Boxing Organization (WBO) title contender, Olusegun Ajose have added their voices in praising the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) first ultra-modern boxing gymnasium commissioned by Lagos Stated Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).
Speaking at the official inauguration over the weekend in Lagos, Mensah said the standard of the boxing gymnasium is currently the best in Nigeria. In terms of quality and maintenance, he further commended the effort of the body’s chairman, Olawale Edun in revamping amateur boxing in Nigeria.
He said: “It is a landmark achievement for boxing fraternity in Nigeria. The gymnasium is simply the best. We used to have something of this nature in the past, but I must confess we lack maintenance culture.
I remember vividly the boxing gym at the Army Abalti Barracks in Surulere, and host of others too. But where are they now, they have all gone to the oblivion.
“The only gymnasium I can think of now is the one at Morocco (in Somolu, Lagos), but the standard of the one we see here is of high quality compare to that.
However, kudos must go to the LBHF Chairman, Mr. Wale Edun on the completion of this project. ”
In his own reaction, Ajose hinted that the boxing gymnasium is of high professional standard, capable of boosting the image of boxing in Nigeria.
He further applauded the Monthly Saturday boxing show initiative, which according to him is helping young boxers in Nigeria to focus on their career.
