Just
as it was at the 18th National Sports
Festival,so was it again as the Lagos State Boxing team emerged tops at
the
just concluded National Boxing Championship held at the Brai Ayenote
Boxing
Gym,National Stadium Surulere Lagos as
organized by the Nigerian Boxing Federation.
The
Lagos Team which dominated most of the bouts,won five Gold,One
Silver and One Bronze medal to emerge
victorious at the weeklong tournament.
Her victory came from the men
60kg,64kg,69kg and women 75kg weight category respectively.
With
over one thousand boxers drawn from over twenty states
from across the country participating ,team Lagos, showed class in the
men
lightweight category(60kg) when Oto Joseph defeated Nkama Sunday of the
Nigerian Army while Olaide Fijabi who fought in the light welterweight
category(64kg),beat
Olaiya Awolusi from Cross River State to win the gold medal as Abua Christian
stopped
Adeniyi Korede from Kogi State in the 69kg weight class.
Francis Gabriel
outclassed Akanji Monsuru of the Nigerian
Security and civil Defence Corps to
claim the gold medal in the 91kg weight
class which is the heavyweight category.
The
“Eko Oni Baje” team’s fifth gold medal was won in the
women 75kg weight division where Teniola Are scored a 2-1 split decision
over
Milicent Agboegbulem from Delta State.
Ondo
State came second on the medal table with two gold,one
silver and a bronze medal while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence
Corps,won
one gold,two silver and one bronze medal to place third on the overall
medal
table.
President
of the Nigerian Boxing Federation
Brigadier-General Kenneth Minimah
commended all the states that participated in the championship and
stressed that the need to revive boxing in the
Country was responsible for the organisation of the tournament.
Minimah
also
hinted that henceforth, the sing song for Nigerian boxing is
“Forward Ever,backward Never”.Adding that
the Boxing Federation under his able leadership has alo lined up other
laudable
programmes as follow-up for the just concluded
National Boxing Championship
