President Jonathan To Honour NFF With National Awards

President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR on Sunday pledged to honour members of the Executive Committee and Management of the Nigeria Football Federation with the much-coveted National Awards, acknowledging that the team has performed wonderfully since coming into office 38-and-half months ago.

While announcing cash rewards for players and officials of the Golden Eaglets, that conquered the world for a record fourth time, at the FIFA Under 17 World Cup finals recently concluded in the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria’s leader praised the tremendous efforts of the present NFF team in winning major trophies now and again.

“Some of the Board Members and Management will be considered for the National Awards for their contirbutions to the development of Nigeria football,” President Jonathan said at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

Indeed, the present Board of the NFF has broken grounds in several areas, winning seven trophies (four from major competitions and three from high-profile friendlies) within the past three years and ensuring positive mention for Nigeria internationally all the time.

In its 38-and-half months of existence, the Maigari-led team has played a total of 213 matches, winning 124, drawing 32 and losing 57.

The administration has also, through very mature approach laced with virtues of humility and strong character, maintained a very cordial relationship with the leadership of the National Sports Commission, while also establishing good rapport with Nigerian Missions abroad, which has rubbed off positively on the various National Teams and Nigeria’s representative Clubs.

For the first time ever, Nigeria’s senior home-based players have qualified to participate in the African Nations Championship, and this week, Nigeria’s ticket to the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals will be confirmed when the Super Eagles tackle Ethiopia in Calabar in the second leg of the final qualifying fixture, with a 2-1 advantage from the away leg.
