Football team of Citadel of Grace Mission International Orphanage Home won the 5th Kidsport Charity Cup which was held at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island on Sunday.

Citadel showed their supremacy over their counterparts, Street Care and Welfare Initiative in the final match which ended 3-0. The one day tournament, which was organised for the orphanage homes in Lagos, was witnessed by the wife of Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mayowa Ikuforiji and Mr. Agboola Pinheiro, former chairman of Lagos State Sports Council among other guests.

Mrs. Ikuforiji, who was moved by the display of the boys on the field of play, said that she saw the glory of God in the children who, despite being orphans, showed that they have great hope in life.

“I want to commend the organiser of this event, Mrs. Bukola Alabi Edem because nobody could have thought that these children are full of football talent. This is a lesson for all of us that we should not lose hope on whatever we are doing. I want to call on spirited Nigerians to give support to Kidsport in its effort to give meaningful life to these orphans,” said Mrs. Ikuforiji.

Project Friendship Initiative, PFI, won the third place match of the eight-team soccer competition which was played on knock out format. PFI defeated football team of SOS Children’s Village, Isolo 5- 4 through penalty shootout after they played 1-1 in the regulation period.

The winners, Citadel were presented with a giant trophy, LCD TV and medals while corporate gifts from the sponsors were given to all the players by Mrs. Edem, who commended the players for the spirit of sportsmanship which they exhibited in the tournament.

She disclosed one of the outstanding players of the competition, Seun of SOS team would be given a scholarship to Kanu Football Academy courtesy of the former captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Nwankwo Kanu, who incidentally is an Ambassador of Kidsport.

Mrs. Edem called for support for the annual tournament from Nigerians, adding that the plan for next year’s edition is to organise the competition early in 2014 so that the winners will have the opportunity of taking part in an international tournament scheduled for Ghana in December next year.

Supports for this year’s competition came from the Lagos State Government, Nigerian Bottling Company, Golden Penny, Promasidor Nigeria, e600 Small Chops, SOAAR Cocktails, Click Shots, Melrose Publishing and a host of others spirited Nigerians.
