NFF President, Aminu Maigari, has described as a
landmark the commissioning of the Gokana Central Stadium in Rivers State at the
weekend, constructed by the Gokana Local Government, the first of its kind in
the country by a third tier of government. Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen
Okechukwu Keshi also spoke in a similar vein.
Maigari, who was represented at the occasion by former Green
Eagles skipper, Chief Patrick Olusegun Odegbami (MON), described the stadium
project by a local government as a demonstration of the fact that responsible
governance at whatever level can bring development to the people very quickly.
He however called on the local government to ensure that the
facility which hosted the Super Eagles at the weekend and is for eight thousand
fans is properly maintained if top sides and even nations are to make it their
camp site as envisaged by the LGA Chairman, Hon Demua Ledee Demua.
River State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, who was at the ceremony spoke in a similar
vein, declaring that he was happy that he was not the person making the initial
observation of a poor pitch. “The pitch has to be excavated and regressed properly”,
the Governor said.
Keshi spoke in a similar circumstance after it appeared he
lost one of his key players, Yinka Adedeji to the bumpy pitch while the team
was warming for the encounter against Gokana United.
“We will be delighted to
come back here and camp or play but we must maintain the pitch and ensure that
international best practices are observed, apart from that it’s a wonderful
edifice and the Gokana people and indeed Rivers State deserve commendation.
