Necessary arrangements have been concluded for the maiden edition of the Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Kids Soccer Competition which kick- off with preliminary matches on Sunday, second of March, 2014.
The competition sponsored by Obafemi Awolowo Foundation and organised by the National Youth Soccer Association will feature sixteen grassroot football clubs in Lagos State.
Speaking at a media parley yesterday, Executive Director of the Foundation, Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, said that sponsoring the competition was in line with Chief Awolowo’s landmark contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.
According to her, the eventual winner of the tournament will receive the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira while first runner- up gets one hundred and fifty thousand naira just as the second runner- up grab the sum of one hundred thousand naira.
Secretary General of the National Youth Soccer Association, Ganiyu Aliu said tournament was designed to celebrate the one hundred and five posthumous birthday of Chief Awolowo.
He said football players would be drawn from the academies of the association in Lagos which cut across all local governments in the state.
