Pupils
participating in the Premier Lotto Lagos Athletics Championship have
commended Govenor Babatunde Raji Fashola, for paving the way for the
growth of athletics and other sports in the
state.
The
tournament, which began on Monday with zone One which comprises of
forty (40) secondary schools tends to create an avenue for the pupils to
display their talents to the admiration of the state athletics coaches.
Mercy
Abire, who competed in the maiden edition of the tournament, said it
was a wonderful decision for the Lagos State Ministry Youth, Sports and
Social Development with the support of Premier Lotto to organise a
worthy athletic competiton for secondary school pupils who do not have
avenue to display their God's own talents.
"It
is a wonderful decision to organise an athletic competition for
secondary school pupils.This is where to get raw talents to compete in
various competitions such as the Africn aYouth Championship.I was here
last year for the tournament and i smiled home with a Laptop for her
feat."
The
long jumper, who represented
Lagos State at the 18th National Sports Festival tagged EKO 2012 Games
wher he won a Silver medal, said her participation in the holiday
training programme supervised by Lee Evans and Tony Osheku, encouraged
her to win a Silver medal at the African Youth Championship held in
Warri, Delta State.
"I
am a long jumper and i represented Lagos State at the EKO 2012 Games
and i came second with a distance of 6.01 metres.I went for African
Youth Championship in Delta State and i came second and i competed
against Blessing Okagbare."
"Yes,
it has really exposed me to forge ahead andd my prayer is to become the
Nigeria's best jumper"I need sports equipment couple with a sports
facilities to achieve my set objectives."
Okoronkwo
Blessings, says the comptition which is primarily a "Catch Them Young
Programme" will enable the organisers of Adopt- A- Talents Programme to
discover
young talented athletes who fall under their event.
"This
programme is a Catch Them Young Programme which would afford the
organisers of Adopt- A- Talents Programme to select athletes who will be
nurtured to stardom"
She
urged the Lagos State Government to intensify iots scholarship
programme as it would further encourage secondary schools pupils to
partcicipate in the annual athletic competition, stressing that the
tournamnet ha really exposed her to top athletic championships.
Ihuama Emmanuel sees the competition as an avenue for them to display their talents.
