The Metro Professional League, MPL, which kicked-off yesterday at the Agege stadium started with the opening match between Bridge Boys FC and 36 Lions Football Club.
Akinyooye, said the MPL which was the pioneering professional football in Lagos with ten private football clubs would be played on a home and away format as the league would eliminate the win-at-all cost syndrome with major football league in the world since there would be no promotion or regulation in the first two seasons.
In a bid to encourage soccer fans to troop out en mass to match venues, the MPL, Chief Executive Officer, said the league matches would be played on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday as the league management team had a solid structure to make the league achieve its set objectives, stressing that the Metro Professional League would beam smiles of joy on the participating teams as the eventual winner win the sum of two million naira.
The league Director, Godson Uti, said the MPL would be managed in line with prominemt professional football league structure in the world which is devoid of government intervention and also encourage football buisness to thrive unlike in the Nigerian Premier League where most of the participating clubs are owned by government.
Uti, said the league could had a teething problem at the initial stage but it would stand as a reference point in building well structured league where corporate bodies and sports philantropists would interest to promote the league and also set the pace for the players to attract invitation to the national teams or clubs outside the shore of Nigeria.
Chairman, 36 Lion Football Club, Gafar Liamed whose team has been participating in the Nigeria National League, NNL, said they decided to be part of the MPL, because it is less expensive to run as it would also pave the way for each participating team to make profit.
