After not-too-impressive performance at the just concluded International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour tagged Kuwait Open, Nigeria’s pair of Aruna Quadri and Kazeem Makanjuola at the weekend left for Qatar to take pat in this week’s ITTF World Tour tagged Qatar Open.
The Kuwait Open was dominated by China and the Nigerians are hoping to do better at the Qatar Open serving off on Tuesday February 18 in Doha.
As the draw for the Qatar Open holds on Monday February 17, Quadri and Makanjuola are praying for easy draw to share from the juicy prize money at stake in the tournament.
“I think we are hopeful of doing better in Qatar because it has been a long time that we featured in this kind of tournament with some of the world’s best featuring in the competition. There is no doubt that it will also be tough in Qatar, but we are going to try at least to qualify from the group to the main draw. With more competitions like this, we will surely be in good shape for the Commonwealth Games holding in Scotland come July,” Quadri said.
For Makanjuola, taking part in the Kuwait Open has indeed exposed him to top class competition. “I think coming to this World Tours has indeed shown that we still have a long way to go in the game. The game is faster and the players are more tactical. So for me, I hope I will do better in Qatar to show that I am improving with each competition,” Makanjuola said.

First round losers will each receive $1,500, while winners of the Men’s and Women’s Singles events will receive $35,000 each with runners’ up getting $17,000 respectively.
In each of the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles events, the winning pair gets $9,500, the runners up wins $4,700; whilst in the U-21 Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles events winners will get $3,000 each while runners’ up will smile home with $1,500.
