Hilal, Pillars Wrap Up League Titles

Written By sportsweight.blogspot.com on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 | 6:00 AM

Al Hilal and Kano Pillars have been crowned league champions in Sudan and Nigeria.

The two sides sealed the titles over the weekend; Hilal on Friday whilst Pillars, completed a hat-trick of titles on Sunday.

Hilal claimed the title at the expense of their bitterest rivals, Merreikh, after settling for a barren draw in the ultimate fixture of the season at a packed Hilal Stadium in Omdurman. The ‘Saeed al-Balad’ finished on 65 points, one more than sworn rivals, Merreikh, to wrestle the trophy from the latter.

Meanwhile, the two sides will represent Sudan in next year’s CAF Champions League.

Elsewhere, Pillars made certain of a third league triumph thanks to a 4-0 thrashing of relegation bound, Nembe City, in the penultimate match of the season.

A brace from Azeez Shobowale and other strikes from Gambo Mohammed and Adamu Hassan were enough to take Pillars’ tally to 65 points, four more than rivals, Enyimba with a game to spare.

This means that the outcome of the final fixture between Pillars and Enyimba, will make no impact as far as the summit is concerned.

Pillars join the likes of Heartland (formerly Iwuanyanwu Nationale) and Enyimba as the only sides in the history of Nigeria football to clinch three league titles in a row.
