Korean Ambassador Taekwondo Championship kicks off in Lagos

Athletes across the country will on Friday converge in Lagos for the kick off of the 5th Korean Ambassador Taekwondo Championships holding at the Mobolaji Sports Centre, Rowe Park.
  The three-day tournament is part of the efforts by the Korean Government to strengthen ties with Nigeria and it is expected to unearth new talents for Nigeria in taekwondo.
Among the events to be competed for at the tournament are Team Event (Kyorugi) and Poomsea and over 200 athletes are expected at the championship.
  According to the Secretary General, Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), the tournament would help to put the athletes in shape for the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.
  The tournament will be retaining its unique team fighting and team forms format and is sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea with support from LG, and Samsung Electronics.
  This is the first time the two electronic giants are coming together to support the same event in history in Nigeria. The Nigeria Taekwondo Black Belt College, also headed by NTF President, George Ashiru, will organise the event while Lagos State Taekwondo Association will host just as the 2013 edition.
  Teams from all over the nation, including the armed forces and para-military sports units have concluded registrations for the tournament, which traditionally offers free accommodation to the first 200 athletes to be registered to compete.
  25 International Referees as well as additional 20 Technical Volunteers, and the staff of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation will be on hand to ensure a smooth and professionally run championships.
  This year, for the first time in the history of the Nigeria Taekwondo, a sitting Minister of Sports will grace a national Taekwondo Championships. Dr Tammy Danagogo, demonstrating support for the sport of Taekwondo has indicated that he will attend the events. Also, for the first time in Taekwondo history, all living ex-presidents of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation will be attending, and will all receive awards from the current President, George ASHIRU, for Exemplary Service to Nigerian Taekwondo.
  The Embassy of the Republic of Korea, which has demonstrated her support for Nigerian Taekwondo development severally over the decades will be graceful co hosts and organisers with the attendance and support of the Korean community in Lagos.
  Also, a three-day referee refresher seminar was concluded on Thursday in order to acquaint the officials with latest in the sport. Majority of the participants at the seminar will handle proceeding s at the tournament.
