Over nine thousand secondary schools across the country will feature in the eighteen edition of Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship tagged Building Champions in Life as Delta State will host the final in June.
Category Manager Beverage, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Olufemi Akintola, said his company was truly committed to a higher purpose of ensuring the total development of champions in Nigeria as over one thousand school pupils participate in their various sports development programmes as the young champions were ataught the importance of sports.
While explaining that his company has been at the forefront of basketball development through the tournament, Akintola, said a large percentage of both male and female national basketball players passed through the championship.
He said the state preliminaries would be staged in each state from Monday till next Friday to determine each state champion as they would be grouped into confrences, stressing that winner of each conference would be rewarded with trophies and cash gift for thedevelopment of sports facilities in their respective schools.
Apart from two hundred thousand that will be given to twelve schools that qualify for the national final in Delta State, Akintola, said the eventual winner will smile home with the sum of One hundred and fifty thousand naira while the schools that clinch second position will get One hundred and twenty thousand naira just as the third place team grab One hundred thousand naira.
Secretary of Nigeria School Sports Federation,NSSF, Bisi Joseph, said the sponsor has nurtured the tournament to maturity as the sponsor has carve a niche for itself in the development of sports especially in basketball.
She assured that there would be data capturing and biometrics of players at the conference as the gesture would be an undefeated tool of war against recurring the use of mercenary.
The Chairman Delta State Sports Commission Tonoboa Okowa gave the assurance that the facilities would be put in place for the championship as well as security of the players and officials.
"Our indoor sportshall in Asaba will be used.We need to fine- tune a few areas to befit the championhsip of that magnitude''. ''As host, we will not loss focus of getting out teams ready for the championhsip''. Delta State is also targeting the top position at the Grand finale.
