The organisers of the All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championhsip popularly called NNPC/SHELL Cup, has encouraged coaches of national teams and football clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League to take advantage of the tournament to scout for talents.
The External Relations and Communications Manager, Shola Abulu, said many professional clubs in Europe and Nigeria had used the tournament to pick talents for their teams as she mentioned that Idowu Akinjide who played for National College, Ughelli in two thousand and twelve edition of NNPC/SHELL Cup was part of the Golden Eaglets that won the FIFA Under Seventeen World Cup in twenty- thirteen in United Arab Emirates.
Abulu, said the increasing successes of the competition and the growing
number of football stars of significant repute produced by the
tournament had shown that students could attain academic excellence
while pursuing their passion for sports, adding that the competition
laid the foundation of academic and football success for youths in the
country whose identity would be revealed by the discovery of their
talent in the course of the tournament.
Abulu, who stressed that the tournament which venture into an unchartered territory eighteen years ago where no corporate body attempted to sponsor a nation wide age-grade event, said many young football players who had been discovered from the competition had represented Nigeria in international age- grade football competitions.

She stated that, Ejike Uzoenyi, Cletus Itodo, Ajani Ibrahim,, Eyimofe Joseph and many others in the Nigeria Professional Football League are products of the championship, Abulu.
President of Nigeria School Sports Federation, Ibrahim Mohammed, said the tournament was strictly designed for students who are yet seventeen year old as any school that feature over- age players wuold be sanctioned.
According to him, the tournament will kick- off on Friday across the country with preliminary matches while the zonal elimination which will be played in nine zones will begin in April.
Semi final matches and final will be played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Thursday, 5th of May, 2016 as the winner will smile home with the sum of three point five million naira, second goes home with the sum of One point three million naira just as the third place team gets One point one million naira.
