The attention of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, the sole competent governing body of basketball in Nigeria has been drawn to the unauthorised take-off of African Basketball League, ABL, in Lagos State.
NBBF, stated clearly that the fedration was the competence and authority to approve a basketball league in Nigeria and only FIBA Africa, the governing body of the game in Africa was competent to approve any type of African league, thus no approval has been granted by either of the two bodies,NBBF and FIBA Africa.
The federation, said exploratory meetings held by NBBF, FIBA Africa
and the organisers of African Basketball League,Africa Sports and
Entertainment Management Company Limited, ASEMC,spelt out the conditions
to be met before the proposed league could be approved, adding that
none of the conditions had been met.
The NBBF, advised ASEMC to follow the path of honour by observing due process and obtaining approval from the competent bodies before floating the league, stressing that the league was unauthorised, illegal, without a guaranteed basis and fraught with problems.
The federation, warned that Nigerian basketball teams playing in the illegal league to stop with immediate effect or lose their eligibility to play in the DStv Premier Basketball League organised by the federation.
To this end, NBBF has suspended the trio of Segun Adekanmbi, Lai Alimi and Samuel Shofoluwe, indefinitely with immediate effect as FIBA Africa will also take necessary disciplinary action against them for flouting its clear directives.
According to NBBF, the basketball federations of Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Senegal, have not granted approval for the league in their countries as a result of which none of the three teams supposedly from the countries can presently play a home game in Abidjan, Libreville or Dakar.
