
Twenty five thousand athletes will participate in this year's Lagos State Sports Month billied to begin between Nineteenth and Thirtieth of this month.
The preliminary round will start of the twelve of this month as the competition proper begins on the Nineteenth through thirtieth of April,2010.
The Chairman of the State Sports Council, Agboola Dabiri, told sportsweight.blogspot.com the sports month would feature twenty four sporting activities with a view of discovering athletes who would be groomed ahead of the National Sports Festival in Rivers State in October.
The games according to Dabiri, was part of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola commitment to improve the lives of the youths through sports by taking sports to the grassroot for youth development, stressing that the governor is very keen on sports development to empower the youth, hence the reason the governor wants the event to be grassroot oriented.
He said the tournament would accomodate Secondary School pupils in the Junior category and Local governments and local council development area in the Senior cadre, stressing tha forty local government and lcda have registered for the tournament.
To Dabiri, it is the policy of the Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to invest in the discovery of budding of budding talents, nurture and expose them to the world through regualr tournaments that would pave the way for the athletes to ehibit their talents.
According to him, the Teslim Balogun Stadium would host five sports, Yaba College of Technology would accomodate two sports just as the sports council would be engaged with twelve sporting activities while Hockey will be played at the Campos Square Mini Stadium as Oshodi Sports Complex will host traditional sports.
He believed that the sports month would help to reposition sports in the state as the sports council coaches would serve as sports scouts during the event, adding that the sports council has initiated an idea to have a data base of its athletes.
He said the theme for this year's Sports Month was "IBILE 2010" and it signifies the five divisions of Lagos State.
