20 Scrabble Clubs Vye For Honours

A sum of four hundred and fifty thousand Naira has been earmarked for the maiden edition of the Lagos State closed Scrabble Championship sponsored by the Centre for Intervention Development Leadership.

The competition according to the Secretary of the Association, Agbana Comfort Ololade, said the event billed to begin this Friday through Sunday at the Sportsbar of the Teslim Balogun Stadium would serve as a build up to the forthcoming South West Zone One Scrabble Championship in July.

The Competition according to Ololade would attract twenty Scrabble clubs in the state as well as individuals who are interested to feature in the tournament, adding that the Association decided to welcome individuals to take part in the event in a bid to attarct more members through their affiliated clubs.

She said the Association wants to create an enabling environment for its wards to excel in any organised Scrabble tournament since the National Sports Commission has removed scrabble from the next National Sports Festival in Rivers State in November, 2010.

While Speaking the Director of CIDL, Loretta Alao, said the company decided to sponsor the tournament as a way of giving back to the society and also to keep them busy as i would help them to build a career through the sport.

Alao, said the company's romance with scrabble is very strong because their chairman, Dayo Solomon Alao is a stout scrabble player and he has always been seeking for means of staging regular tournaments to make te sports more popular in the state.

She explained the company's Love for the sport has motivated their sister company, FRYDA, to sponsor a scrabblympic tournament which would come up in October and it would involve secondary scholls pupils.

She explained the need to take scrabble to the grassroot is very important because they are the future of Nigeria scrabble.

The winner of the tournament will smile home with Fifty thousand Naira with a power generator set, the second best scrabble will earn Thirty thousand Naira with a power generator just as the third placed scrabble goes home with twenty five thousand Naira will a power generator.

The scarbble players that clinches the fourth position will take ten thousand Naira with a DVD player just as the fifth psition player will get Five thousand Naira with a DVD player.
