Ashimiyu Dethrones Adeniyi

Ganiyu Ashimiyu of Union Bank Table Tennis Club has emerged the winner of 2011 Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship which came to a colse over the weekend at the Indoor Sports hall of Sir Molade Okoya Thomas, Teslim Balogun Stadium,Surulere.

Ashimiyu, who came to limelight in Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship when he won the Junior Boys Singles in 2006 and 2008, dethroned Adeniyi Kazeem by four set to three to smile home with the sum of fifty thousand naira, a giant frigde among others.

To show his readinesss to outwit the defending champion, Ashimiyu picked the first set, 11 - 9 as Adeniyi fought hard to pick the second set 12 - 10 while Ashimiyu got the third - fourth set, 11 - 4, 11 - 9 to make it three set to one.

Adeniyi, who also want to beat former Nigeria Number ping ponger, Atanda Musa, records in the tournament grabbed the fifth and sixth set, 11 - 4, 11 - 9 to make it three set apiece in the best of seven games.

At the start of the seventh games, Ashimiyu was outstanding with his scintilating performance that earned him five straing points, 5 - 0 as the defending champion could not find his feat in the games that ended 11 - 4.

While speaking the defending champion, said he was sad for failing to break the all time records of Atanda Musa in the history of Asoju Oba Table Tennis Competition as he believed that Ganiyu Ashimiyu deserved to win the Men's Singles.

Kazeem, said it was obvious that Ashimiyu would win the game because he was tired as at the time the game streched into the seventh set and Ashimiyu was still waxing stronger with the zeal to win.

The current champion, who commended the sponsor for giving the state's ping pongers the opportunity to exhibit their skills, said he was elated to have defeated Adeniyi Kazeem who according to him was the strongest ping ponger in the event.

In the Women's Singles, Fatimo Bello, outclassed Tolu Durosimi Etti who won two editions of the Lagos State Table Tennis League, in a four straight set of 11 - 9, 15 - 13, 13 - 11, 12 - 10 to grab the sum of Fifty thousand naira while Durosimi Etti got twenty thousand naira.
