Nimota Aregbesola of Wesley Girls Secondary School and Quadri Quazeem of Arch Deacon Adelaja Secondary school have won the Girls ad Boys singles event in the just concluded Adeyemi Karunmi Trust Table Tennis Championship.
Nimota Aegbesola who beat Emuogbosa Justina of C.M.S Girls Secondary School, by two straight set of 11-3, 11-1, in the Semi-final, subdued Modinat Yusuf of Army Cantonment Secondary School by three set to one, 11-8,7-11,11-7,11-9, in the best of five games.
Aregbesola who was adjudged the tournament’s Most Valuable Player carted away the sum of seven thousand, five hundred naira for winning the Girls Singles event.
Quadri Quazeem, who defeated Adumo Ibrahim of Baptist Junior secondary school, 11-4, in the semi-final, outplayed Summer Quadri of Baptist Junior secondary school by 11-7,9-11,11-9,11-9, to smile home with ten thousand naira.
Baptist Junior Secondary School ranked the overall best team won the Team Event in the Boys category after beating Okesuna Secondary School three set to One as Wesley Girls Secondary School beat Army Cantonement Secondary School by three set to two in the Girls Team Event.
A board member of the Adeyemi Karunwi Trust, Adebamike Oloko, expressed satisfaction with the quality display of table tennis skills as she promised that the trust which has been in existence for over thirty years with various programmes to the society would make the tournament an annual table tennis competition for a minimum of five years.
She said the board had also concluded plans to encourage the Lagos State table tennis coaches to engage in regular refresher courses who in turn would expose the young discovered table tennis players to the rigors of the sport, adding that the ideal of sponsoring the event was not only based on staging the event for the youth but genuinely to create a platform where the ping pongers would be nurtured to become fitire stars in the mould of Atanda Musa, Bose Kaffo, Segun Totiola, Funke Oshinaike, Monday Merotohun among others.
