Fashola Launches Adopt - A- Talents Sports Programme

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, has officially launched the Adopt - A- Talents Sports Programme which stand as the future of the state's sports.

Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Wahid Oshodi, represented the Governor at the official launch which took place on Tuesday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa.

The Commissioner who commended the governor for supporting the programme as well as the programme's initiator, Prince Wale Oladunjoye, and his team, said the Adopt - A - Talent Sports Programme was a fantastic tool towards harnessing the talents in the state, stressing that the programme would produce athletes for the 2014 National Sports Festival in Calabar.

Oshodi, who explained that the programme would outlive the present administration, said the event would be able to discover athletes at tender age with the right training programmes which could transform them to become elite athletes, adding that the programme has been instituted into the sports programme of Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development.

He urged the selected one hundered and six athletes not to relent in working hard to become one of the best Nigerian athletes in their chosen sports as he charged them to emulate Nigeria's World Boxing Council Lightwelter challenger, Segun Ajose, who would be fighting against Erik Moralese in WBC Lightwelter bout in this year.

Initiator of Adopt - A- Talents Sports Programme, Prince Wale Oladunjoye, said the programme was designed to discover and create a pool of budding talents who are expected to under eighteen years in their chosen sports discipline and also to expose them to scientific structured all year round training.

Oladunjoye, who doubles as the Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, said the Governor had endorsed six sports, Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Football/Beachsoccer, Table Tennis, Volleyball/ Beach volleyball with the addition of four sports, Gymnastic,Swimming, Judo and Karate.

He said the programme was an avenue for building an enduring and lasting relationship with the state government, with the government providing channels to enable corporate bodies endorse their brands on various events and emerging sports stars.

He believed that the Adopt- A- Talents Sports Programme would enhance the sponsor's social responsibility to the state and the nation.
