Femi Olusanya and Perreira Oluwabukola displayed good athletics skills to emerge winners of the inaugural editon of Comrade Ayodele Adewale 12 kilometer mini Marathon which took place on Saturday as over one hundred athletes participated in the race.
Olusanya, who left the duo of Rasaq Agboola and Alli Labeeb to the second and third positions, breasted the tape with the time of 20 minutes and 15 seconds to smile home with the sum of thirty thousand naira.
Oluwabukola, school leaving certificate holder and a potential future athlete, won the female category when she returned with he time of 23 minutes and 55 seconds as she went home with the sum of thirty thousand naira for her efforts while Aderonke Olumadi and Ogunkoya Muyiba settled for second and third.
In a post event interview, Olusanya, commended the efforts of the council boss, comrade Ayodele Adewale, chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government for deeming it necessary to organise the marathon for the youths within the council area to improve their health status through a mini marathon race.
He appealed to the council boss not to relent in his efforts to organise series of sporting activities especially at a time when rate of unemployment is very high, adding that the programme would engage the youth positively, thus eliminating the rate of social vices among the youths.
Oluwabukola, who was a threat to her counterparts, urged the council boss to support her quest to become Nigeria's future star in athletics as she believed that she needs financial support to purchase necessary equipment and also to further her education, adding that the gesture would propel her to the podium of success with a reputable coach.
The council Manager, Elder Olusegun Ajayi, who represented the chairman, Ayodele Adewale,said the event was geared at creating an healthy environment for the youth residing in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.
Ajayi, who xplained that the competition was part of their programmes to empower the youths, said they would expand the scope of the tourney in subsequent editions, stressing that athletes discovered at the event wold be selected to participate in Lagos State Sports Festival billed for this month through May, 2012.
Council Supervisor for Agric, Youth and Sports, Jenmi Ajibola, who was satisfied with the turn out of the athletes, said the gesture would prompt the council to delve into series of sporting activities as he urged the youths to always engage themselves in sporting activities to keep them fit.
The best three athletes in the male and female categories were rewarded with cash prizes and gifts while consolatory gifts were giving to athletes ranked fourth to tenth in the male and female categories.
