Lack of regular handball competitions have been identified as the major factor militating against the development of handball in Nigeria.
Head Coach of Delta State Handball Team, Henry Obi, who made this statement in an interview with sportsweight.blogspot.com,said Nigeria had great handball coaches and players who could redeem the nation's image at the International competitions but it is disheartening that the players are only subjected to regular training sessions without tournaments to assess them.
Obi, whose team defeated Lagos Team B, which comprises of former Lagos State handball players, said the ongoing Sam Ocheho Invitational Handball competition would spur numerous sports philantrophits to invest in handball with the hope of elevating thestatus of the sport.
According to him,the trend has forced potential handball players to search for greener pastures, stressing that corporate bodies should endeavor as part of their Civil Social Responsibility beckon on the sport which was second to football in past.
