Activities to make the 16th Nigeria Cup Golf Tournament a glamorous one has begun at the Ikoyi Club 1938.

A press briefing to herald the tournament, which is organized by the Nigerian Community of Ikoyi Club golf section to celebrate Nigeria’s independence from 22-30 September, was held Wednesday at the Golf Section of the Club.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Tayo Babalakin said that the Nigerian Community of the club is organising the competition because other Communities of the Golf section like the Indian, French and the Koreans also organise tournaments to celebrate their national days.

"The Nigeria Cup is the only tournament that accommodates the participation of all cadre of golfers: our kids, our lady golfers, our respected veterans, golf professionals and our guests. Prizes and trophies are won in each of these categories," said Babalakin.

He said that the tournament will be crowned with a gala night where all participants will socialise and usher in the 52nd anniversary Nigeria's independence. He noted the week long event is is largely financed through contributions from sponsors.

"Some of our major and traditional sponsors are with us this year: UBA, Access Bank, Heineken, Diamond Bank and Bi-Courtney Aviation Service.

They have stood by the Nigerian Community over the years. Friends of the Nigerian Community and members of the golf section are also donors and we recognize the sacrifice they individually make," he said.

He thanked the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Community of the Golf section, the captain of the section and his executive committee, the Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938 and his executive committee for being pillars of support.

"Your support has been overwhelming and invaluable. Members of the press, we have also enjoyed your support in broadcasting our activities both in the print and electronic media," he concluded.
