The 2 kilo metre Lagos Beach Marathon sponsored by RLG Communications was held at the Alpha Beach, Victoria Island to celebrate Nigeria's 52nd Independence anniversary and to draw attention of the authorities on the need to protect Nigeria's coastline.
Olayiwola won the race at six minutes, 45 seconds with a cash prize of seventy five thousand naira and RLG's Fusion Tablet, beating Saka Sanusi (6:48:30) to second position.
He got N50,000 and a RLG Smartphone, while Hassan Mohammed (6:48:70) came third and won N25,000 and a RLG Smartphone.
An elated Olayiwola commended the organisers and the sponsor.
"This tournament came at the right for me and the money I won here today will help me prepare hard for the festival because I want to win gold in the 5,000 and 1,500m races at the national championship which Lagos will host in November," Olayiwola said.
Chief Operating Officer, COO, of RLG Communications, Taiwo Latilo commended the over 50 athletes that took part in the tournament, adding that being an environment-friendly organisation, RLG is in Nigeria not only to empower the youths but join hands with relevant organisations to help address the issue of ocean erosion in the country.
National Coordinator of the CAP, Phillips Obuesi said the beach marathon was organised to reach out and bring to focus the issue of ocean erosion as they want the concerned authorities to take strategic and drastic action for the protection of the coastline.
He also commended partner, Desco Tourism Development Limited, DTD, for its support.
