Ashimiyu who outplayed Kazeem Adeniyi at the final of last year's edition defeated Lukman Sanyaolu a deaf ping ponger three set to two,11-2,11-4,11-13,9-11,11-1,to move to the round of sixteen which start today.
Similarly Kazeem Adeniyi seed two,also scaled through to the round of sixteen after defeating oto Fatai,11-6,11-4,11-5 while Gbenga Anthony beat Babatunde Awosanya by three set to two. In other games played yesterday in the Men's singles,Ayo Omotara,Olayide Omotara,Adeyinka Ahmed,Samson Agbaje,Kehinde Awobajo are through to the round of sixteen.
In the Women's Singles,Ayo Udoh outplayed Munirat Tokosi,a deaf player,11-2,11-8,11-7,as Bose Ogunnubi beat Ganiyat Animashun,11-6,11-7,11-7,While Aliyat Adedeji defeated Idiyat Jimoh. Sidi Sunmonu beat Odunola Osinulu,11-6,11-4,6-11,11-6.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State table tennis Association,LSTTA,has explained the reason why the association has allowed the deaf,Para-table tennis players to participate in the 44th edition of Asiju Oba closed table tennis championship.
The annual table tennis Competition began on Monday at the newly renovated Sir Molade Okoya- Thomas indoor Sports hall in the ,Men's and Wowen's Singles.
The Technical Director of LSTTA, John Peters, said the move was part of the association's efforts to assess the preparedness of the deaf and para table tennis players and to stand a chance to outwit their counterparts who might not have opportunity to feature in a competitive tournament loading to the EKO 2012 Games.
Peters,said the special table tennis players featuring in the competition were the best selected ping pongers who were picked after a through conducted trial. However the competition continues today in the Junior and Cadet Categories.
