The Oyo State Table Tennis Association (OYSTTA) has boosted the state team ahead of the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012, with the donation of a Joola brand table for the team.
Its Chairman, Waheed Ekun, said the association decided to complement the government’s efforts to ensure that the state excel at the table tennis event of the championship.
Ekun, the pioneer champion of the festival in 1973, said he was sure that the state would surpass the Rivers 2011 feat at Eko 2012.
“We believe with the donation of the new table, the players will get used to the table ahead of the festival because we envisaged that Lagos being the host, new tables might be used during the festival.
With this table our players will learn how to control their services as well as correct all their lapses before the kick off of the festival on November 27.
For us, this is one way to motivate the team to do well and we are sure that the state will be among the top teams in the event,” Ekun said.
He however, boasted that Team Oyo would be a team to beat at Eko 2012.
“I still believe that Oyo is the home of table tennis because most of the players that have featured for this country have played in Oyo and for us we believe we are the home of table tennis.
With the kind of players we have in the Oyo State team, I am sure that the state will do well at Eko 2012. There is no doubt that Lagos is favourite for the event but I am sure Oyo team will be among the best,” Ekun added.
