The camp of University of Lagos was agog on Saturday when it was announced that the team have won the 4th edition of Lagos Inter Tertiary Games.
Team Unilag were adjudged as overall best team of the championship with 9 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.
They dethroned last edition’s winners, Team Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH to the third position.
Yaba College of Technology, Yabatech came second with 6 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals, while LASPOTECH won 1 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals.
This year’s Tertiary Games was climaxed with the football event during the closing ceremony held at the sports complex of Yabatech.
LASPOTEC, however, took solace in the soccer gold of the tournament as they defeated hard fighting Unilag team 3-0 via penalty shootouts after the match ended 1-1 in the regulation time. Yabatech beat Lagos State University, LASU 3-1 to win the third place match.
LASPOTECH pocketed the sum of N1.2m, Unilag team were given N850, 000, while Yabatech boys went home with the sum of N450, 000.
Captain of Team Unilag, Akano Idris Olanrewaju, a 400 level student of Physics, commended Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, for making it possible for students of higher institutions in Lagos to exercise their God-given sports talents with rewarding prize monies, which he said, have been useful for the students in their studies.
“We prepared hard for this competition and I thank God that we reaped the fruits of hardwork and determination with the support of the school’s management, Olanrewaju said.
Sports Commissioner, Wahid Enitan Osodi, who was the Chief Host of the event, commended the students for their spirit of sportsmanship, adding that the state government is looking at ways to increase the number of sports which the students are competing for in the future editions.
Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, the Commissioner for Education, who was the Host, said that the ongoing synergy between her ministry and the sports ministry is yielding fruits, adding that the state government is building sports complex across communities in Lagos so that both public and private schools will use them as sports facilities.
The Inter Tertiary Games was facilitated by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola headed by Prince Wale Oladunjoye and was organised by relevant sports associations in Lagos State.
