Federal
High Court Abuja this afternoon ordered the Minister
of Sports and Chairman of National Sports Commission Bolaji Abdullahi
not to swear
in the President and Board members of Handball Federation of Nigeria
scheduled
to take place tomorrow in Abuja.
In a suit
brought before it by a handball stakeholder group
known as Mega Handball Veterans, the group lamented that the National
Sports
Commission failed to comply with the Election Guidelines which
the commission provided following the
expiration of the former board.
Mega
Handball Veterans specifically pointed at the provision
that concerns the nomination of stakeholders and appointment of players’
representative which was not properly followed according to the Election
Guideline.
The
National Coordinator of Mega Handball Veteran, Nicholas
Nwani regretted the inability of the commission to follow the guidelines
it
provided saying that they tried their best to draw the attention of NSC
but
they were not given a listening ear, resulting to the body to seek
redress in a
law court.
“I
sincerely believe that judiciary is the last hope of an
ordinary man. We tried our best in calling the attention of the National
Sports
Commission when the illegality was on but nobody cared to listen to us”
“As law
abiding citizens, we believe that the only remaining
option is for us to bring it to the notice of the judiciary so that
justice
will be done in this matter”
Few days before the sports federation
elections, a group accused the Sports Ministers of hijacking the
election
alleging that the Kwara born Sports administrator was going against the
guideline in order to accommodate his cronies.
The
Election Day witnessed lot of protest from sports like
Basket Ball, Cricket, Athletics etc. Alhaji Yusuf
Dauda was returned unopposed as
the president of Handball Federation of Nigeria.
There are
imminent fears that there will be more legal
battles from stakeholders of other federations and this could mar the
swearing in
ceremony today.
