Master Pius Urges Nigeria Taekwondo Fedration To Emphasis On Martial Art

Nigeria Taekwondo Federation,NTF, has been adviced to dwell more on the martial art of the sport than focussing on the competition aspect of it despite being an Olympic sport.

Master Pius Ilukhor, who gave this advice while speaking with Sportsweight.blogspot.com, said the sport had improved tremendously unlike in Nineteen Eighty -seven when there was no mats and Nigerian international referees to officiate as the trend has been a blessing to the second edition of Eko International Taekwondo Championship.

Ilukhor, a former captain of Nigerian team to the All African Games in 1987,said the competition had shown that there are good fighetrs in the country but they lack the basic tenets of Taekwondo, character building, modesty, perseverance,self control and indomitable spirit, adding that these are the basic pre- requisite for a black belt athlete and a prospective Gold medalist at the Olympic Games.

To achieve this, he said the Federation must delve into grassroot programme to popularise the martial art of Taekwondo because it is dangerous for any taewondo practitioner who had made appreciative impact to become useless after his competitive years.
